Hello again. So today was my second day at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and it's unfortunate to say that this one was less productive than the one on tuesday (I skipped wednesday to take AP's). I arrived at 8:30 and it was sunny and cool. The weather was perfect. Upon arrival Aaron loaded up the chainsaws and we headed off down furnace run to fell a rotten, maple tree.
Initially, I wasn't worried at all, I figured chopping trees was just running a chainsaw through the trunk, yelling timber, and watching the mammoth peice of wood plummet to the earth. It's not that simple. He ran through on the process of felling trees, yet the only words i really caught on to were "Have an escape route," "run like hell," "Use a tourniquet if the bleedin' gets bad," and "Safety, safety, safety." He was especially worried about this tree since the "meat" was rotten and maples usually hollow out when they're dead, so sawing a 70 degree face to secure your 10% hinge via plunge cut (Just some lumberjack lingo, nbd) could send a tree falling in a direction you dont really want it falling on, namely your head. However, the sawing went beautifully and in 5 minutes the tree slammed into the spot we wanted it to go. It was awesome.
After that, we just cut the grass, nothing to glamorous, but it was fun and beats sitting inside all day. I learned how to drive stick as well.
